Under both state and federal laws, employment discrimination is prohibited. In California, the Fair Employment and Housing Act (FEHA) prohibits discrimination in the workplace. This Act applies to employers, employment agencies, apprenticeship programs, labor organizations, and any person or entity who aids, abets, incites, compels or coerces the commission of a discriminatory action.
Classifications that are protected under the Act include:
- Race
- Mental Disability
- Color
- Medical Condition
- Religion
- Marital Status
- National Origin
- Sex
- Ancestry
- Physical Disability
- Genetics
- Age
- Sexual Orientation
- Pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions
The Act also prohibits retaliation against an individual who opposes a practice forbidden under the Act, files a complaint, testifies, or assists in proceedings under the FEHA.
