What is an Employer’s Workers’ Compensation Obligation?

With a few exceptions, all employers in California are required to carry workers’ compensation insurance or demonstrate that they are self-insured and have the financial resources to cover any reasonably anticipated claims.  Failing to fulfill this requirement is a misdemeanor in California, and can have consequences such as stop orders and substantial penalties.  Maintaining workers’ compensation insurance can help insulate employers from liability, so long as they do not act intentionally to cause injury.
